eSIM for visitors to the USA: data, coverage and setup

A guide for visitors to the United States: which networks travel eSIMs use, coverage in cities and national parks, how much data you need and how to set it up.

Visiting the United States? A travel eSIM gives you mobile data from the moment you land, without a SIM shop or a contract. Pick a plan that covers your trip length, at about 1 GB per day, install it at home, and turn it on when you arrive in New York, Los Angeles, Orlando or anywhere else.

Which networks cover the USA?

The three national networks are AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. All three cover cities, suburbs and main highways, with wide 5G. Each plan page shows the networks the plan connects to.

Coverage in the USA

Cities and suburbs: strong coverage nearly everywhere.

National parks: Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and Zion have little or no signal away from visitor centres.

Desert highways: long gaps between towns in Nevada, Utah and Arizona.

How much data do you need?

Light use (about 0.5 GB a day): maps, messaging, ride apps and some browsing.

Normal use (about 1 GB a day): the above plus social media, photo uploads and a few video calls.

Heavy use (2 GB or more a day): streaming, many video calls, or sharing your connection with a laptop.

A one-week city trip with normal use needs about 7 GB. A road trip with maps and music all day needs more, about 1 to 2 GB a day.

Do you need a US phone number?

Most travel eSIMs are data only. Uber, Lyft, WhatsApp, FaceTime and most apps work over data. Some US services send sign-in codes by text, so keep your home SIM on for texts with its data roaming off. If you need to call US businesses, some plans include minutes; the plan page says so.

Visiting Canada or Mexico too?

A North America eSIM covers the US, Canada and Mexico with one plan. Check that every country on your route is listed in the plan.

How to set up your USA eSIM

Buy your plan on ViraSIM and open the email or the My eSIMs page.

At home, on Wi-Fi, scan the QR code or tap the install button. It takes about two minutes.

Name the new line "USA" and leave it off until you travel, if the plan's days start on first connection.

When you arrive, turn on the USA line, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Keep your home line on for calls and texts, with its data roaming off.

Tips for using data in the USA

Emergency number: 911, from any phone.

Download offline maps before visiting national parks, and buy park passes online in advance.

Most places take contactless cards and phone payments. Tipping is expected in restaurants and taxis.
