T-Mobile international roaming vs a travel eSIM: is the free data enough?

T-Mobile plans include data in 215+ countries, but often at slow speeds or with a small fast allowance. See the International Pass prices and when a travel eSIM is better.

Most T-Mobile plans include data in more than 215 countries at no extra cost. On many plans that data is slow (about 256 kbps, enough for messages but not maps or video), and better plans include a fast allowance of 5 GB to 15 GB before speeds drop. T-Mobile sells International Passes for more fast data, or you can add a travel eSIM for fast local data at one upfront price.

What your T-Mobile plan includes

Top plans (Experience Beyond, Go5G Next): up to 15 GB of fast data abroad, then slow data.

Middle plans (Experience More, Go5G Plus): up to 5 GB of fast data, then slow data.

Older and basic plans: slow data only, or no data abroad.

Calls: about $0.50 a minute on most plans. Mexico and Canada are usually included.

International Pass prices

1 day: $10 for 2 GB.

10 days: $50 for 15 GB.

30 days: $75 for 30 GB.

When a travel eSIM is better

Your plan includes only slow data and you need maps, ride apps or video calls.

You will use more than your fast allowance, for example when sharing data with a laptop.

You visit a place outside T-Mobile's list, where passes do not work.

On a top plan for a short trip, T-Mobile's included data may be enough. For longer or heavier trips, a local travel eSIM is usually faster and cheaper than a pass.

How to switch to a travel eSIM

Check that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM on our supported devices page.

Buy a plan for your destination and install it at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about two minutes.

When you land, turn on the travel eSIM, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Keep your T-Mobile line on for calls and texts, with its data roaming off, so no pass or daily charge starts.

Bottom line

Check which T-Mobile plan you have before you fly. If it includes only slow data, add a travel eSIM. Find a plan for your destination.
