How to set up an eSIM on iPhone (step by step)

Install a travel eSIM on your iPhone in about two minutes: check compatibility, scan the QR code or tap to install, then set the right line for data abroad.

Setting up a travel eSIM on iPhone takes about two minutes. Do it at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. Then switch the new line on for data when you land, and keep your home line for calls and texts.

1. Check that your iPhone supports eSIM

iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every newer model support eSIM, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).

Your iPhone must be unlocked , or locked to a carrier that allows other eSIMs. To check, go to Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions .

iPhone models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao mostly use two physical SIMs instead of eSIM. Some exceptions exist.

See the full list on our supported devices page.

2. Install the eSIM

After you buy, you'll find your eSIM in the ViraSIM app, on the My eSIMs page and in your email. There are three ways to install it:

Tap to install (fastest, iOS 17.4 or later): open the install link on the same iPhone and follow the prompts.

Scan the QR code: show the QR code on another screen or print it. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular ) > Add eSIM > Use QR Code and scan it.

Enter details manually: on the same screen, choose Enter Details Manually and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your eSIM details.

Keep Wi-Fi on during installation. The install downloads a small profile, and that needs internet.

3. Label your lines

iPhone asks you to name the new line. Use something clear, like "Travel", and keep your home line as "Primary". This makes the next steps easy.

4. Choose which line does what

iPhone asks three questions. Choose:

Setting Choose Why

Default line (calls and texts) Primary Friends and banks reach your normal number.

iMessage and FaceTime Primary Your Apple ID stays on your normal number.

Mobile data Travel All data goes through the eSIM, not expensive roaming.

Turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching . Otherwise your iPhone may use your home line's data when the travel signal is weak, which can cost you roaming charges.

5. When you land

Go to Settings > Mobile Data and tap your Travel line.

Turn on Turn On This Line and Data Roaming . Travel eSIMs connect as roaming, so this switch must be on.

Tap your Primary line and turn Data Roaming off , so it can't use data abroad.

Wait up to a minute for the network name to appear at the top of the screen.

Troubleshooting

No signal after landing: check that Data Roaming is on for the Travel line. Turn Airplane Mode on and off. Under Network Selection , turn off Automatic and pick a network listed on your plan page.

"Unable to complete cellular plan change": you're probably not on Wi-Fi, or the QR code was already used. Contact support instead of scanning again.

Data works but is slow: you may be on a weaker partner network. Try selecting another network manually.

Can I delete the eSIM after my trip?

Yes, under Settings > Mobile Data > Travel > Delete eSIM . Wait until your plan has ended, though. A deleted eSIM usually can't be reinstalled, and you may want to top it up for your next trip.
