eSIM for Turkey: a traveler's guide

Everything you need to stay connected in Turkey: the best networks, the 120-day phone registration rule, how much data to buy, and coverage in Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast.

A travel eSIM is the simplest way to get online in Turkey. You avoid the passport registration and phone-registration rules that come with a Turkish SIM card. You install it at home and it works from the moment you land at Istanbul or Antalya.

Why not a Turkish SIM card?

Turkey requires foreign phones used with a Turkish SIM to be registered after a short grace period, known as IMEI registration. Registration costs a fee and needs a visit to a tax office or a carrier shop. Tourist SIMs work around this for a limited time, but they cost more and need your passport at the counter.

A travel eSIM connects as a roaming visitor, so your phone doesn't need registering. Check your plan's details for its validity.

Networks and coverage

Turkey has three mobile networks: Turkcell , Vodafone and Türk Telekom . Turkcell generally has the widest coverage, including rural Anatolia. All three are strong in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and the coastal resorts. 5G is rolling out in major cities. Elsewhere you connect on fast 4G.

ViraSIM plan pages show which network each plan uses.

Coverage where tourists go

Place What to expect

Istanbul Strong 4G and 5G. Crowds at Sultanahmet and Taksim can slow data at peak times.

Cappadocia Good in Göreme, Ürgüp and Uchisar. Weak in valleys and underground cities.

Antalya and the Turquoise Coast Good in towns and resorts. Patchy on boat trips and in remote coves.

Pamukkale and Ephesus Good at the sites. Download tickets in advance anyway.

Eastern Turkey Thinner outside cities. Download offline maps.

How much data do you need?

A week in Istanbul: 5 to 7 GB for maps, messaging, ride-hailing and social media.

Two weeks touring: 10 to 15 GB, more if you upload a lot of photos and video.

Remote work or streaming: an unlimited plan for your trip length.
