Do WhatsApp and FaceTime work in the UAE, China and Egypt?

Which calling and messaging apps work in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, China and Egypt, why it depends on how your connection is routed, and how to stay in touch.

WhatsApp and FaceTime messages work almost everywhere. Calls are different. Some countries restrict internet calling on their local networks. What you can use depends on the country, and on whether your data goes through a local network or is routed from abroad.

"On local networks" is the key phrase. A local SIM, hotel Wi-Fi or cafe Wi-Fi uses the country's rules. Many travel eSIMs connect as a roaming visitor, and their data may be routed through another country. Then apps often behave as they would at home. Each plan works differently, so don't count on it for anything critical.

United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi)

In the UAE, WhatsApp text, photos and voice notes work normally. Voice and video calls on WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype and similar apps are restricted on UAE networks, and that includes hotel Wi-Fi. Licensed calling apps, such as Botim and Microsoft Teams, work.

What this means for you:

Plan to message, not call, on WhatsApp.

Voice notes are the easiest way to "talk" with family at home.

For a real call, keep your home SIM on for normal phone calls (roaming charges apply), or use a licensed app.

China

On Chinese networks and Wi-Fi, Google (Maps, Gmail, Search), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X and YouTube are blocked. FaceTime and iMessage generally work. WeChat is the everyday app for messaging, paying and booking.

Travel eSIMs for China usually connect as a roaming visitor, with data routed outside mainland China. On such a plan, WhatsApp, Google Maps and Instagram typically work as at home. That's the main reason travelers choose a travel eSIM over a Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi.

Before you go:

Install WeChat and Alipay at home and set them up with your card.

Download offline maps. Apple Maps and Amap work well inside China.

Remember that hotel Wi-Fi follows local rules, even if your eSIM doesn't.

Egypt

In Egypt, WhatsApp messages, calls and FaceTime usually work on local networks and Wi-Fi. Call quality can drop in crowded places and outside the big cities. Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh have good 4G. Coverage gets patchy in the Western Desert and on long Nile stretches.

How to stay in touch anywhere

Use a travel eSIM for data, so you don't depend on hotel or cafe Wi-Fi.

Keep your home SIM on for texts. Bank codes and verification messages still arrive, with data roaming off on that line.

Send voice notes when calls are restricted. They use very little data.

Agree on a backup with family, such as a time for a normal phone call.

Bottom line

Messages work in all three countries. Calls are the issue in the UAE, and most of the big apps in China, on local networks. A travel eSIM keeps you connected without hotel Wi-Fi. See plans for the UAE , China and Egypt .
